On Monday, July 3, the American financial markets will close early in commemoration of the Independence Day holiday.

The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will shut down on Monday at 1 p.m. ET and remain closed on Tuesday in observance of the federal holiday.

Monday and Tuesday will see the U.S. bond market close at 2 p.m. Eastern time.

Although Independence Day has been a federal holiday in the US since 1870, the event's celebrations have a long history dating back to the 18th century.

The Fourth of July has been observed as the beginning of American freedom from 1776 to the present.
