The White House

The discovery in the West Wing, which includes the Oval Office and other workplaces for presidential aides and staff, led to a short evacuation.

Secret Service agents found the unusual substance during a routine inspection of a place that is accessible to tour groups

President Joe Biden and his family were at the time residing at Camp David in Maryland.

A senior law enforcement official revealed to the American partner of the BBC, CBS News, that the substance was found in a storage facility that White House staff and guests routinely use to store their mobile phones.

At 20:45 local time (00:45 GMT) on Sunday, it was discovered, and the White House complex was immediately shut down out of an abundance of caution.

After some investigation, it was discovered that the substance was cocaine.

The NSA will supervise a comprehensive probe into how it gained access to the White House, according to individuals who spoke to CBS.

To find out who had access to the area where it was discovered, they stated that cameras and entrance logs would be inspected.

Cocaine is a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Substances Act, according to the US drug Enforcement Administration, which means it has a high potential for misuse.

The West Wing, a vast, multi-level portion of the White House that contains the president of the United States' offices, is where the Oval Office and the Situation Room are situated.

Along with hundreds of other employees who have access, it also houses the offices of the vice president, the White House chief of staff, the press secretary, and others.
